Herleva is daughter of a Fulbert, a tanner/burgess of Falaise,
Calvados, Normandie. She is called Robert I "The Magnificent" Duke of
Normandy's "Danish" wife [not married before clergy]. The mistress of
Robert I (as known as Robert "The Devil") she was the mother of
William the Conqueror. She also had a daughter, Adelaide, by Robert.
She later married Herlouin (De Burgo) de Conteville and had a son
named Odo by him. Herleva is also spelled Herleve, Harlotta, and
Arlette. Does the word 'harlot' originate from her name?
