BIO:Service Record of Marvin Keith Jacobs: 1943 Naval Boot Camp at
Farragut, Idaho. Then to Naval Fire Control School, San Diego, CA.
Service at Norfolk, VA and then to Bath, Maine where the Destroyer,
"Mannert L. Abele" was being built (Commissioned at Boston, Mass.).
April 1945 Abele was sunk, survivors returned to States. Abele had
seen duty at Bermuda, Trinidad, Panama Canal, Pearl Harbor, Ulithi,
Eniwetok, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Keith received honorable discharge as
Fire Controlman 2nd Class, Dec 1945 after 5 months duty on ship
"Tangier". April 12 1945 the Abele was sunk by Japanese suicide
planes while the ship was on picket duty off Okinawa. Keith lost many
of his buddies, especially the ones below deck. Being a
Rangefinder/Radar Operator and on duty, he was topside, where he could
escape. They were strafed by Japanese planes while in the water
awaiting rescue after the ship had sunk.
